“Nothing compares to the simple pleasures of a bike ride.” (John F Kennedy). This view may not have been shared by those who battled through pouring rain in last year’s Ride+Stride, but surely this year the weather will be kinder to us.
Wiltshire is an ideal county for Riding or Striding. In the big towns like Salisbury, Swindon, Chippenham or Trowbridge you can visit several churches in a short space of time; or you can opt for tranquil side-roads that take you through beautiful countryside to picturesque villages with the church standing proudly at the centre.
In 2016 over £53,000 was raised by enthusiastic participants with ages ranging from 4 to 85. The more energetic covered over 100 miles and 40 churches, but those who just walked from their own church to a neighbouring one made an equally valuable contribution.
If you are one of the 83% of people who acknowledge the importance of churches for our communities and our national heritage, why not join us this year on Saturday 9th September? You don’t have to be supremely athletic to take part: plan a route that suits your energy level, have a nice day out with family or friends, and raise some money for your own church and for the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust, to enable it to continue offering grants to churches in need of repair.
There are small cash prizes for the most successful participants in 3 different age-groups, and trophies for the best achieving parishes. Last year St. James, Bratton fielded 42 participants, winning both the Brooke Cup and the Junior Cup. Who can wrench these trophies away from them this year?
