Rutland Ride+Stride is a sponsored event for cyclists, joggers, walkers and horse riders. The event is held in Rutland once every two years in order to raise money for the preservation of the county’s beautiful and ancient church buildings. Ride+Stride was last held in 2017, and the next event is Saturday 14th September 2019.

Participants challenge themselves to visit as many churches as they can by their chosen mode of transport and at the same time raise money to support the work of the Rutland Historic Churches Preservation Trust. Whilst many of our participants choose to walk or cycle we welcome anyone who is willing to take on a personal challenge. Horse riders are welcome and we’d love to see a unicyle or three-legged team!

Half of what participants raise in sponsorship will be re-allocated specifically to their nominated church (if any) and the other half to the funds of the Rutland Historic Churches Preservation Trust for general use on churches/chapels in the county of Rutland.

A fun day out

The objective is to have a fun day out visiting some very special church buildings in Rutland, and to raise a lot of money for a very worthy cause – but there are also prizes to be won!

All participants receive a certificate, and cyclists who visit over 45 churches receive a special certificate. There are two trophies for achievement and effort: the Davenport-Handley Cup for the Rider who cycles to the most churches, and the Barnsdale Lodge Trophy for the most enterprising Strider. There are also two prizes: Rutland Cycling vouchers for the team that raises the most money, and lunch for two are Barnsdale Lodge for the Strider with the most impressive feat (or should that read feet?). In 2015 the Rutland Historic Churches Trust also added a new category called Starbursters. The challenge for Starbursters is to organise a team and, by splitting the team into two or three groups following different routes across the county, ensure that every one of our 64 churches is visited by at least one member of the Starburster team. We expect each Starburster team to start from a single place probably their home church but those at the edges of the county will find it easier to start from closer to the centre.
